Meet
Lise Cloutier-Steele

Lise Cloutier-Steele is the author of Living and Learning with a Child who Stutters, and the recipient of a Canada 125 Award in recognition of a significant contribution to the community and to Canada for her volunteer efforts to help children who stutter and their parents.

She is also the author of the Canadian and U.S. editions of Misinformed Consent – Women’s Stories about Unnecessary Hysterectomy. In September 2004 and 2005, she appeared on the CBC’s The Nature of Things with David Suzuki. The CBC documentary film was based on Misinformed Consent and featured interviews with the medical experts who supported the book project.

In 2008, Lise was the managing editor of an art book featuring the autobiography and contemporary paintings of artist Blair Thomas Paul, www.blairpaul.com. On the Edge of Discovery was released by Penumbra Press in 2009.

Also in 2008, Lise contributed print and video interviews for a Canadian Press investigation, the results of which were published in a series of newspaper articles and television news reports, and showed that long-term care facilities across the province of Ontario failed to meet the standards of care to ensure that residents are kept clean, fed and pain-free.

The experience prompted Lise to write a book on the quality of care provided in care institutions. In There’s No Place Like Home, Lise shares her experience as her late father’s guardian and advocate during his years in a long-term care facility. The book moves from personal stories to practical information for all caregivers.
