Ontario commits to more unannounced inspections of nursing homes

CTVNews.ca

Ontario is planning to increase its scrutiny of long-term care facilities, including ensuring that each facility receives at least one unannounced inspection per year. Ontario Health Minister Deb Matthews announced that her ministry will also be hiring more inspectors to perform the unannounced “Resident Quality Inspections”. Her announcement follows a number of recent incidents that called into question the safety of care at some nursing homes in the province. In the most recent episode, the son of a nursing home resident released hidden camera footage to media outlets showing his 85-year-old mother being repeatedly treated at a home in Peterborough.
