Long-term care staff expected to provide full patient care in 6 minutes

Letter to the editor by Colleen MacLeay, The Chronical Journal, Thunder Bay

I am trying to wrap my head around the Ministry of Long-term Care’s expectations. Staff are expected, and given six minutes to wake up patients, wash, moisturize, check full body for any new or worsening skin conditions, dress, transfer, do mouth care, toilet, and do their hair! This is expected for two staff caring for 25 residents? In my eyes, if you can do this in six minutes, it’s abuse. Or all steps are not being done. It makes me crazy that this ministry can get away with this. It is so far off of any kind of reality and humanity for what our residents are paying, and their families are so desperately depending on us to do, and what is promised. Things need to get real. This is only part of trying to give our all that these old souls deserve and desperately need. I am asking our seniors – please speak out and speak up for those who can’t. We have to fix this now!
